The North Island Cubs have won the 2023 Seawolves Icebreaker Tournament, defeating the Victoria Sr. Mariners 3-2.

​

There's nothing like starting the season off with a big win, and the 2023 Cubs 18UAAA team has done just that. Playing in the Inaugural Seawolves Icebreaker tournament held at Rotary Park in Victoria, the Cubs started off tournament play with another victory over the Parksville Royals, defeating them by a score of 5-1. 

​

In the second game of the day, the Cubs downed the North Fraser Nationals by a score of 6-0. Team defence was paramount in this game - not allowing a single run and committing zero errors defensively.

​

With two wins, the Cubs found themselves finishing in 1st place after the round robin portion, and this set them up with a semi-final matchup against the Victoria Seawolves. Once again, team defence payed off as the locals blanked the Sewolves 5-0, and advanced them to the Final against the Victoria Sr. Mariners.

​

In the final game, Rookie pitchers Ethan Crowhurst, Corbyn Nohr and Hunter Auramenko all combined to throw a fantastic game and continually mystified Mariners batters. Team defence was strong again and allowed the Cubs to come away with a well deserved 3-2 win for the Championship!

​

Regular season play starts April 8th against the Seawolves at the Cubs' brand new facility at the Sportsplex Field #3.

The North Island Cubs have repeated as Fall Classic Tournament Champions again, defeating the Parksville Royals 6-5.

​

For the 3rd year in a row, the Cubs have captured the title on the final day of play at their own tournament. This year was probably the most exciting finish in the tournament's history.

​

Heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, trailing the Royals by a score of 5-3, Cubs lead-off batter Marcus Petersen reached first base on a dropped 3rd strike. Rookie Nate Parchomchuck was brought in to pinch run for Petersen as Coby Mcgrath came up to bat for the Cubs. Parchomchuck easily stole 2nd base on a passed ball, and one pitch later McGrath popped out to the shortstop. North Island's next batter, Eric Schultz then singled to center field advancing Parchomchuck to 3rd, while Schultz advanced to 2nd on some heads up base running. Maguire Parker was then brought in to pinch run for Schultz, as lead-off batter Zach Auramenko was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases with one out. The Royals opted to make a pitching change as Cubs 2nd baseman, Hunter Auramenko came to the plate. Sitting on a 2-2 count, Auramenko jumped all over a fastball, lining a double into left field which scored Parchomchuck and Parker and advanced his brother Zach to 3rd, tying the game 5-5 leaving the winning run only 90 feet away. This set the stage for one of the most exciting plays in baseball, as Kaleb Robertson came to the plate. As the Royals pitcher delivered - Robertson squared to bunt as Auramenko took off from 3rd. The bunt was placed perfectly down the 1st base line which allowed Auramenko to slide across home safely and walk -off the Royals for the second time in the tournament, capturing the title 6-5 in front of a fired up home town crowd. Auramenko and Robertson were both mobbed by their teammates who emptied the home dugout in celebration.

​

The Cubs started off the tournament with a 5-4 win over the Royals on Saturday morning, followed by 10-0 win over the Victoria Seawolves Saturday night. The only blemish on a perfect weekend was a 10-3 loss to the Nanaimo Pirates Sunday morning, but was avenged in quarter final play with a 16-4 win which gave the North Island squad a bye to the Championship game against the winner of Parksville and Nanaimo in the Monday morning semi final.

​

The Cubs would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who help make the Cubs Fall Classic tournament happen every year. A huge thank you goes out to the Victoria Seawolves, Nanaimo Pirates and Parksville Roylas for attending again this fall, and for providing some of the best baseball we've seen at the tournament. The North Island Cubs are pleased to announce their Fall Ball Program for 2022.

​

We will be offering two programs this fall:

​

• 15U  (Players born 2008 - 2009)

• 18U  (Players born 2005 - 2007)

​

Sessions will begin September 6th, and will run through to October 16. Players will be on the field Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as indoors at the newly opened Elevate Fitness Baseball training center on Wednesdays. Games and Inter-squads will be scheduled for weekends.

​

The six week program will focus on hitting, fielding, pitching, base-running and position specific training. We are extremely excited to be the first organization to utilize the two-lane batting cages and indoor training facility at Elevate Fitness. Both lanes are outfitted with Hit Trax technology for a better instructional experience, and instant feedback on players' performance.

​

It wasn't the follow-up weekend both Cubs teams were hoping for after their successful starts to the season, but both teams were able to take positives out of their respective weekends.

​

The 18UAAA team faced the Vancouver Community Mounties on Saturday at Nunns Creek Park. In game 1 the Cubs started rookie ace, Marcus Petersen who threw a complete game facing 27 batters. He had 8 strikeouts and only 2 walks, allowing 3 hits over 7 innings. Nick Peters doubled and Zach Auramenko singled in the Cubs' only two hits of the game. Wyatt Murray and Kanoah Sequeira  each had a stolen base en route to a 3-1 victory.

​

Game 2 saw the Cubs bats continue to struggle as they didn't register a single hit. Wyatt Dumont got the nod as the starter and threw a complete game, striking out 9 Mounties batters and walking only 1. The Cubs got behind early and didn't plate a run until the 6th when Murray, Auramenko and Robertson all scored, but it was too little too late as they fell to the Vancouver Community team 4-3.

​

The 15UAAA team travelled to Vancouver for a matchup with the Ridge Meadows Royals on Saturday. Game 1 saw the Cubs lose to the Royals 5-1. Singles went to Corbyn Nohr, Hunter Auramenko, Hayden Robbins and Ethan Crowhurst. Robbins registered the Cubs' only run. Pitching duties were shared by Nick Saflin, Crowhurst and Rylan Nohr. They allowed a combined 6 hits, while striking out 5 and not issuing a single walk. Game 2 saw Peyton Fitzgerald get the start on the mound and she went on to pitch 3 innings, striking out 2 and walking 2. Linden Robertson threw the 4th & 5th innings, allowing 1 hit, striking out 2 and not issuing a single walk. Hunter Auramenko was brought in to close the 6th & 7th and struck out 1 batter, not allowing a single hit. Offensively the Cubs were shutout by the Royals pitching as they didn't manage to register a hit, losing a close game 2-0.

On Sunday the Cubs played the Chilliwack Cougars. Game 1 had Hunter Auramenko start on the mound, throwing 3 innings with 4 strikeouts and no walks. Max Fischer pitched 2 innings issuing 1 walk, and Nick Saflin threw 1 inning to close, striking out 1 Chilliwack batter and not issuing a walk. Auramenko had the Cubs only hit as the locals dropped a 4-0 decision to the Cougars. Game 2 saw the North Island bats start working as Auramenko doubled and singled, while singles went to Sebastian Verklan, Alex Mills and Linden Robertson. Saflin scored for the Cubs in a 7-1 loss. Corbyn Nohr got the start and went 3 innings with 3 strikeouts and no walks, followed by Fitzgerald, Crowhurst and Robertson who had a combined 3 strikeouts and only 1 walk.

The North Island Cubs 18UAAA and 15UAAA teams started off their respective seasons with perfect records last weekend.

The 18UAAA team started things with a road trip to Chilliwack where they played a neutral site game against the Kelowna Sun Devils on Saturday night. Great pitching and stingy defence helped the Cubs defeat the Sun Devils by a score of 4-1.

Wyatt Dumont threw a complete game, striking out 6 and issuing only 1 walk as he faced a total of 25 batters through 7 innings. Offensively the North Island squad had singles from Kaleb Robertson, Jaxon Irving, Wyatt Murray and Linden Hicks. Robertson scored twice on RBI's from Zach Auramenko and Murray, while Murray and Hicks each scored themselves. The Cubs only committed 1 error the entire contest.

​

Sunday had the Cubs in Cloverdale to play a double header against the Spurs. Game 1 saw a combined pitching effort between Zach Dobie and Marcus Petersen. Dobie had 1 strikeout and 1 walk through 2 innings, while Petersen had 6 strikeouts and only 1 walk through the remaining 5 innings. Offensively, Petersen was 3 for 3 with a double and two singles (1 RBI), Braydon Penn had a double and a single (2 RBI's), Hicks (1 RBI) and Kanoah Sequeira had a pair of singles each, while singles went to Auramenko (1 RBI), Robertson (2 RBI's), Murray and Irving (1 RBI). Murray scored 3 times and Auramenko crossed the plate twice. Single runs were scored by Robertson, Nick Peters, Sequeira, Irving, Petersen, Penn and Hicks to make it a 12-6 Cubs victory.

Game 2 had the Cubs start veteran Braydon Penn on the mound. Penn faced 20 batters through 5 innings, striking out 7 and issuing only 2 walks before the game was called due to weather. Once again the Cubs only committed 1 error defensively. Penn (1 RBI) helped his own cause with a triple to the fence in the 5th, while Brian Robbins was 2 for 3 with a double and a single (1 RBI). Robertson was also 2 for 3 with a pair of singles (1 RBI). Singles went to Auramenko and Peters (2 RBI's) as the Cubs rolled to a 7-4 win to close out the weekend.

​

The 15UAAA team made the jump to the AAA division this season, and started things off with two convincing victories against the Cowichan Mustangs on Saturday.

​

Game 1 saw Hunter Auramenko pitch 6 innings, striking out 10 while Corbyn Nohr came in to close out the 7th, striking out 2 in a combined shutout. Offensively Rylan Nohr and Haydon Robbins each had doubles, while singles went to Sebastian Verklan, Chase Robbins, Auramenko, Ethan Crowhurst, Linden Robertson and Nick Saflin in an 11-0 Cubs win.

Game 2 was another combined effort on the mound with Rylan Nohr, Crowhurst and Robertson all sharing the hurling duties. The Cubs pitching staff only allowed 2 hits over 7 innings while cruising to a 7-0 win. Hayden Robbins was the first Cub of the 2022 season to go yard as he ripped a ball over the left-center fence in the top of the 7th and added a double to his offensive attack as well.  Alex Mills contributed with a triple, while Verklan, Fischer, Rylan and Corbyn Nohr and Robertson all pitched in with hits of their own. Final score was 7-0 for North Island.

​

Next weekend the 18UAAA team hosts the Vancouver Community Mounties while the 15UAAA team travels to Vancouver to face the Ridge Meadows Royals on Saturday and the Chilliwack Cougars on Sunday.

The North Island Cubs defeated the Nanaimo Pirates 3-2 in the Championship final of their own Fall Classic Tournament this weekend at Nunns Creek Park.

​

After an exciting semi final win over the Parksville Royals, the Cubs faced the Nanaimo Pirates, who defeated the Victoria Seawolves in earlier semi final action. 

​

Braydon Penn was given the start for the Cubs, throwing 2 complete innings, striking out 2 Pirates batters and allowing a single run. Rookie right hander, Zach Auramenko was brought in and threw 4 shutout innings, striking out 5 Nanaimo batters and not issuing a single walk. Kaleb Robertson was brought in to close in the 7th, striking out 1 batter and allowing only a single run.

​

It took until the 4th inning for the Cubs to finally get on the board, on singles from Brian Robbins, Maguire Parker and Elijah Sulz (2 RBI's). They continued their offence in the 5th with a double by David Klatt, and singles by Zach Dobie and Brian Robbins (1 RBI).

​

The Pirates were threatening in the top of the 7th until Robertson struck out their 7 hole batter for the 1st out of the inning. After walking the next batter, Robertson caught a hard hit line drive that was hit right back at him and then doubled off the runner at 1st base to seal the Championship Victory for the Cubs, and bring them their second consecutive Cubs Fall Classic trophy!

The Cubs wrap up their fall season with a double header against the VI Mariners next Sunday at Nunns Creek. The North Island squad would also like to thank the parents who volunteered all their time to make the tournament happen, as well as all their committed sponsors who helped throughout the year.

The North Island Cubs walked off the Parksville Royals 4-3, in the Fall Classic semi final, to advance to the Finals against the Nanaimo Pirates on Monday.

​

In what was billed as the "best game of the tournament", the Cubs and Royals provided the fans at Nunns Creek with 7 innings of entertaining and exciting baseball with the Cubs' Kaleb Robertson providing the heroics in the bottom of the 7th, walking off the Royals with a steal of home plate.

​

After 4.5 scoreless innings, the Cubs finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th. With 2 outs, Braydon Penn reached base on an error, and was moved over to 2nd on a single by Kaleb Robertson. The following Cubs' batter, Kanoah Sequeira, was hit by a pitch, to load the bases. North Island's next batter, Elijah Sulz, put a ball in play and created an overthrow to 1st base, which plated all 3 Cubs baserunners. Heading into the top of the 6th inning, the Royals manufactured 3 runs of their own to tie the game on three straight singles, a hit batter and another single. Heading into the bottom of the 6th, the Cubs saw a Royals pitching change. After a leadoff walk, the Cubs batters flew out, struck out and were picked off to end the inning. Closer Braydon Penn entered the game for the Cubs in the top of the 7th, where he got the 1st two Royals batters to ground out and then dispatched the third batter with a strikeout.

​

The Cubs entered the bottom of the 7th with 3rd baseman Brian Robbins grounding out. Braydon Penn then struckout swinging. Down to their last out, catcher Kaleb Robertson drew a walk. 2nd baseman Kanoah Sequeira advanced Robertson to 3rd base on an opposite field single, setting the stage for one of the most exciting plays in baseball. With runners at 1st and 3rd, the Parksville pitcher attempted to pick-off Sequeira at 1st base. As the throw was on its way to 1st, Robertson broke for home and dove across the plate head-first, beating the throw from the 1st baseman and sending the Cubs to the final.

​

Offensively, the Cubs had singles from David Klatt, Kaleb Robertson and Sequeira.

The North Island Cubs defeated the Victoria Seawolves Sunday night in a rain-delayed start which saw the game begin 3 hours later than the original start time.

​

In what was probably the best game the Cubs had played in the entire Fall season, a rain delay, and a blackout weren't enough to keep the locals from grinding out their 3rd win at the Fall Classic tournament at Nunns Creek Park. 

Marcus Petersen was given the start Sunday evening and didn't disappoint, as he threw a complete game win, holding the Seawolves off the scoreboard until late in the 6th inning. The rookie right hander kept the Victoria squad off balance, inducing several ground balls and pop ups for outs, combined with 4 strikeouts of his own. His teammates were solid behind him as they played a flawless defensive game, not committing a single error. Defensive highlights included outfield catches by Chris Rodrigues and Aiden Robertson, catcher - Maguire Parker throwing out a stealing Victoria baserunner at 2nd, and 3rd baseman, Brian Robbins, throwing across the diamond for 3 outs at 1st base.

​

The Cubs pounced on the Seawolves early, putting up 5 runs in the 1st, as both teams were loud and hyped up as the banter from both dugouts could be heard all around the park. Offense was consistent from the Cubs as singles went to Rodrigues, Aiden Robertson, Petersen (1 RBI), Maguire Parker (1 RBI), Levi Karasz (1 RBI), Kanoah Sequeira and Zach Auramenko. Kaleb Robertson had a pair of singles to round out the Cubs attack.

​

As the game entered the top of the 7th inning with Cubs runners on base, the field lights went out - halting the game at 11:00pm. After a brief delay while the lights restarted, the Cubs managed to score 2 more runs and were threatening to put up a couple more, when the lights went out for good. Unfortunately the game had to be called at 11:45pm, bringing an end to a marathon day for both the Cubs and Seawolves with a 9-1 North Island victory.

The North Island Cubs edged out the Nanaimo Pirates in their second round robin game of the Fall Classic tournament at Nunns Creek Park Thanksgiving weekend, by a score of 11 -9.

​

Eric Schultz was given the ball for the Cubs to start the game, and he dealt for 2 2/3 innings, striking out 5 Nanaimo batters before the skies opened up and put the game under a rain delay. After an hour long delay and subsequent cleanup of the field, the game resumed with Kaleb Robertson taking over the pitching duties for Schultz. Robertson threw 2 1/3 innings, striking out 3 Pirates batters before being replaced by Zach Auramenko, who closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts himself. Cubs pitchers were being kept below the maximum allowable pitch count for the day by the coaching staff, to enable them to pitch the following day if needed.

​

Auramenko (1RBI), Brian Robbins (2 RBI's), Kanoah Sequeira, and Marcus Petersen (2 RBI's) all had a pair of singles, while doubles went to Elijah Sulz and Levi Karasz (1 RBI). The Cubs offence was consistent, scoring runs in all but one inning. Aggressive baserunning was also evident as Auramenko, Karasz and Sequeira all scored twice.

The North Island Cubs opened their 2021 Fall Classic with a convincing win over the Parksville Royals.

Saturday's tournament opening game saw the Cubs' Brayden Penn take the mound and throw 4 innings, striking out 4 Parksville batters. He was replaced by Marcus Petersen in the 5th, who had 3 strikeouts of his own. Offensively the Cubs were led by 1st baseman, Brian Robbins, who was 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles and a pair of singles (3 RBI's). Penn contributed to his own cause with a double and a single (1 RBI), Zach Dobie mirrored Penn with a double and a single of his own (2 RBI's), while singles went to David Klatt, Maguire Parker, Eric Schultz and Levi Karasz.

​

After scoring single runs in the 1st and 2nd innings, the Cubs exploded with 5 runs in the 3rd, one in the 4th, two in the 5th, and another four runs in the 6th to round out the scoring for a 14-10 win.

Hunter Auramenko threw a no-hitter against the Saanich Force, in the 3rd and deciding game of their quarter - final series. The win advances the 15UAA North Island Cubs on to the next round of playoffs, next weekend.

​

Marcus Petersen led the way offensively, going 3 for 3 with a double and two singles ( 3RBI's ), Maguire Parker had two doubles ( 1 RBI ), while singles went to Hunter Auramenko, Hayden Robbins ( 1 RBI ), Zach Auramenko ( 3 RBI's ) and Rylan Nohr ( 1 RBI ), who just recently returned from an injury.

The Cubs defence was stingy, not allowing a single run, and not committing a single error through 5 innings. 

​

The North Island 18UAAA team finished first overall in their division, winning the pennant and securing a first round bye. They will face the North Shore Padres in a 3 game series August 7th & 8th.

​

Eric Schulz was brilliant on the mound on Saturday, throwing a no-hitter to lead the 15UAA Cubs past the North Island Royals 12-1. Schulz earned the win for the locals, going five innings, allowing only 1 run on zero hits and striking out 11 Royals batters.

​

The Cubs got their offence going in the first inning, when Spencer Webb singled off of the first pitch he saw, scoring two runs. The Cubs had 8 hits in the game. Nick Saflin and Webb had a pair of hits each, while Maguire Parker hammered a triple to the fence that scored 3 Cubs baserunners. Hayden Robbins hit a 2 RBI double and singles went to Carsen Barton (1 RBI) and Hunter Auramenko (1 RBI). The Cubs defence was stellar as well, not committing a single error all game.

​

The 18UAAA Cubs also started their season on Saturday, picking up a pair of wins over the Cowichan Mustangs. Kaleb Robertson got the nod for the North Island squad in game one, striking out six Cowichan batters over three innings of work. Fellow rookie, Walker Maximick pitched the back half of the game, striking out five batters en-route to a 12-2 win. Offensively the Cubs were led by Landon Bowers with three singles (5 RBI's), David Klatt (2 RBI's) and Braydon Penn with two singles each, while singles were hit by Wyatt Dumont & Zach Dobie.

​

Game 2 saw Joe Frumento get the start as he threw the first three innings, only to hand it over to David Klatt in the fourth. Frumento's debut lived up to the  to the hype, as he led the way offensively, going three for three with a single in the 1st, a double in the 3rd and a three run Homerun that sailed over the left field fence in the 4th. Brian Robbins was also three for three with 3 singles. Owen Lagos was two for two with a pair of singles, while Klatt also added his own double. Singles went to Dumont, Dobie, Bowers, Maximick and Robertson, as the Cubs downed the Mustangs 18-4.

​

On Sunday the 18UAAA squad travelled to Victoria to play the Seawolves at Lambrick Park where they picked up another pair of victories. Game one saw Wyatt Dumont pitch a complete game, striking out 14 and not issuing a single walk. Lagos had three singles, while Klatt had a double and a single. Singles went to Dumont, Bowers, Dobie, Frumento, Maximick and Gareth MacDonald, as the Cubs defeated the Seawolves 10-2.

​

Game two had Braydon Penn on the mound for the Cubs, as he threw his own complete game with 4 strikeouts through 5 innings. Dumont led the way offensively with a double and two singles, while Klatt and Frumento had a pair of singles each. MacDonald and Robbins rounded out the offensive onslaught with a single each as the Cubs triumphed in a 12-2 victory.

​

Both Cubs teams play next Sunday, June 27th. The 15UAA team is home to the Cowichan Mustangs in a highly anticipated contest - 12pm start at Nunns Creek, while the 18UAAA squad travels down to Cowichan to play the Mustangs at Evans Park at 12pm & 3pm.

Current North Island Cub player, Markus Cross has signed with the VIU Mariners of the CCBC. Markus has played with the Cubs since his rookie season in 2019. The 6'1", 170lb RHP/SS/OF  has been a part of two Provincial Championship runs with the Cubs, helping them win the title in 2020. His speed on the bases and his versatility on the field make him a valuable commodity to any team. Look for him to lead the team in his final year as a Cub, as they look for a return to play in the near future. The Cubs organization are extremely pleased to see Markus moving on to the next level where he plans to play baseball and study Engineering. Best of luck Markus!

Former North Island Cub, Matt O'Reilly has made the jump to the next level. The 2020 Grad played two seasons for the Cubs, as a starting outfielder. His work ethic and dedication left a lasting impression on the Cubs franchise, and will serve him well moving forward. Matt played his Grade 12 year in Parksville as a member of the PBL Royals before signing with Douglas College of the NWAC in a Covid shortened 2021 season, O'Reilly plans to return to Douglas for the 2022 season. The Cubs wish him success in his baseball future!

Former North Island Cub, Brayden McClary has committed to the NAIA's Corban University Warriors of the CCC. After playing his final season with the Cubs in 2019, McClary signed with the VIU Mariners of the CCBC for the 2020 campaign. The 6'2" RHP/Catcher/Utility played 2 seasons for the Cubs, leading the way in 2018 with a batting average of .458, including 5 homeruns, 42 RBIs and a whopping 45 stolen bases. He also topped the leaderboard in 2019 with an average of .375, including 3 homeruns and 22 RBIs. The Cubs wish Brayden all the best in his future with the Warriors!

Former North Island Cub, Curtis Owens, has signed with the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack of the CCBC. The 6'2" RHP/Outfielder played 2 seasons with the Cubs and was instrumental in their run to the Provincial final in 2018. In his final season with North Island, he played 37 games and had an average of .423! His quickness and speed also garnered him 12 stolen bases  The Cubs organization wishes Curtis all the best in his future with the 'Pack.

The North Island Cubs wrapped up their Fall Ball season, hosting their own "Fall Classic" series October 23rd - 25th at Nunns Creek Park. 

​

The Cubs Grey team emerged victorious after defeating the Cubs Blue squad in an exciting final played under the lights at "The Creek". Their path to the final was nothing short of exciting as they defeated the Tyees Alumni in a nail-biting extra inning game, which saw them hold off the Tyees in the bottom of the 9th, to secure their berth into the final. Played under very cool conditions, the weather cooperated through the weekend to provide some very competitive baseball. It was a total team effort from start to finish, and provided the coaching staff an opportunity to see firsthand, the talent that will be coming for training camp in 2021!

The North Island Cubs 15U AA baseball team settled for second place at the Final four Tournament this past weekend in Cloverdale, dropping a close game to the undefeated host, Cloverdale Spurs, in the Championship final.

In their Inaugural season at the Bantam AA level, the North Island team surpassed everyone’s expectations by making it all the way to the final game of the prestigious Final four tournament.

In Game 1 the North Island Cubs faced Ladner to start the tournament.  After 4 innings the cubs trailed 5-0, but put up 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to cut the deficit to 1. The Cubs would take the lead in the bottom of the 6th, only to give up 3 runs in the top of the 7th to complete the comeback for Ladner, and hand the Cubs an 8-6 loss in their opener. Leading the cubs with 2 hits was Sean Bow. Zach Dobie had a double with Linden Hicks and Brian Robbins adding singles.

Next up for the Cubs were the Cloverdale Spurs who sported an undefeated record on the season. Cloverdale would put up three runs in the bottom of the 1st and never look back adding 3 more runs over the next 6 innings in a well played game. The Cubs would fall 6-1 to the Spurs. Walker Maximick led the Cubs hitting with a double and a single while Kaleb Robertson also had a 2-hit game. Zach Dobie gave up 4 earned runs over 5 innings for the cubs

Game 3 on Sunday morning saw the Cubs in a must win situation against Surrey/Newton, with the winner moving on to the final for a rematch against the Spurs for the Championship! Marcus Peterson would get the Start on the bump for the Cubs and he was good as he came up clutch, pitching a complete game 4 hit shutout, striking out 9 batters. The cubs came out swinging in this one with three hit performances coming from Brian Robbins, Walker Maximick, and Zach Dobie. Robbins had 2 doubles while Dobie hit a 2-run home run and added 2 singles in a 10-0 Cubs win, advancing them to the championship final against the undefeated Spurs.

At 3:30 Sunday afternoon the Cubs would get another shot at the Cloverdale team for all the marbles and the Provincial final 4 crown. The Cubs would put up 5 runs in the top of the 1st to jump out to an early lead versus the heavily favored Spurs, however they would fail to put the nail in the coffin, allowing Cloverdale to chip away at the lead. With the North Island team still leading by 5 runs with three innings to go, the momentum started to swing in the Spurs favor as they shutout the Cubs’ offense for the final 3 innings and put up 6 runs of their own to complete the comeback. Brian Robbins and Zach Dobie had multi hit games while Walker Maximick, Sean Bow, Brody Warner and Linden Hicks also had hits. Kaleb Robertson went 6 innings on the mound for the Cubs.

The North Island team now has a short break before starting their 2020 Fall ball season. They would like to acknowledge their supporters and sponsors for their help through this shortened season. The North Island Cubs are 18U AAA Provincial Champions after defeating the Kelowna Sun Devils twice on Saturday at Nunns Creek. The Championship final was a "Best of 3 series" in which the Cubs won in two games straight.

Powered by rookie ace, Wyatt Dumont, the Cubs won game #1 by a score of 6-2. Dumont pitched a complete game, striking out 6 and walking only 3 Kelowna batters through 7 innings. The North Island defence managed to hold the Sun Devils to only 5 hits all game. Robert Gurney started the offense for the Cubs with a double in the bottom the first inning, only to be scored by his brother, Austin Gurney, 2 pitches later as he hammered his own double to the right center gap. Dumont helped his own cause with a double in the 3rd and an RBI single in the 4th. Brayden Penn was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles, while Cam Bell had an RBI single of his own in the 2nd.

Game #2 had veteran Austin Gurney get the nod on the mound and he delivered for the local squad. Pitching a complete game shutout in his final 18U AAA game, Gurney struck out 11 batters and issued only 1 walk through 7 innings. Once again, the Cubs stingy defense held the Sun Devils to 3 hits all game. In one of the closest games played by the North Island squad all year, the Cubs scored only 1 run in the 4th, when Riley Sutherland crossed the plate on a  single by Bell. They held on to a 1-0 lead  heading into the 7th and final inning, where they exploded offensively. Lead-off batter Markus Cross hit a single to start the inning, and was advanced to third base on a Cam Bell double over the right fielder's head. Tyler Newby drew a walk, followed by Dumont who also walked, setting the stage for David Klatt who dropped down a perfect bunt that scored two more North Island runners. Catcher, Robert Gurney then walked and was advanced to 2nd on a fielder's choice hit by Austin Gurney.  Sutherland then picked up two RBI's as he grounded out to the Kelowna 2nd baseman, advancing Klatt and Robert Gurney across the plate with some impressive baserunning.  When the dust settled the Cubs held a 7 run lead and all that was left to do was make three more outs. After striking out the Kelowna lead-off batter, Gurney was able to get the next batter to ground out to shortstop, Bell, who threw him out at first base. Fittingly the game came to an end by way of Gurney's 11th strikeout, closing the door on a very successful Cubs season, and clinching the 2020 18U AAA Championship.
